The Dusty York Trio

About the artist

Soon to release his third CD, Portland saxpohonist/composer Dusty York has been a distinct voice in today's NW jazz scene. Playing all original compositions and performing frequently with his father, tenor saxophone virtuoso Michael York, Dusty York Trio has provided a unique sound amongst the wealth of jazz talent that Portland has to offer. His working band for three years features Keith Brush on bass, and Ken Paine on drums, with frequent appearances by bassist Andrea Niemiec. In 2004 they released their debut recording "June Diva", and in 2005 they released "A State Of Secession Volume One", which features Michael York on tenor and spawned Dusty's record label, Diatic Records. Soon after, Dusty began producing and releasing other Portland artist's on the label including: Gordon Lee, Farnell Newton/Marcus Reynolds Quintet, The Mel Brown Sextet, Renato Caranto, John Gross/Dave Frishberg/Charlie Doggett, Ben Darwish Trio, and many more to come. In an effort to keep jazz fresh and growing, the label focuses on groups that play original material, unique song books, and have an original sound. All of the groups have combined as a community to push each others music to a larger audience and create opportunities that are better obtained by a group effort. The trio featuring Michael York plays regularly at Jimmy Mak's, The Old Church, and The Blue Monk, and the trio can be heard monthly at Velour. Also look for showcases by Diatic Records, featuring performances by all of the artist's on the label. Review excerpts for June Diva: "Intelligent, swinging compositions... With the aplomb of a great Sonny Rollins trio,...York exposes a middle ground that communicates directly... Highly recommended." Larry Nai, Cadence Magazine "...exudes understated elegance... recalls the uncluttered sound of classic Blue Note-style hard bop... This is definitely an outfit to keep on the radar screen." Stephen Latessa, allaboutjazz.com "York plays with that same fire and sense of searching that was always evident in (Sonny) Rollins' playing... a very talented composer... displays great promise."
