PHASE ONE: WORDS + MUSIC: The Phase One series has had a remarkable first year, hosting eminent figures in both the literary and musical undergrounds and inspiring a loyal scene of followers eager to see what's next in curator Garett Strickland's plan for his chamber of the NW Art Scene. February 15th marked the anniversary of the first-ever Phase One, held at The Towne Lounge in 2006, with another jaw-dropping line-up and big plans for Year Two.
About the artist
Since February of 2006, Garett Strickland has been hosting/curating the Phase One: Words + Music series at various small venues around Portland. Strickland himself describes the event as "a monthly stage that aims to swirl, subvert, and intermingle musical and literary performance in such a way to bridge supposed gaps, break down expectations, and help build temples to the heart of both. We strive to present the language of music and sound alongside the sound and musicality of language, each pressed sweating up against the other and flowing into equals. We would like to excavate the singular mold that formed and birthed forth both and resurrect it where we stand—in Portland or in omnipresent everywhere, a line drawn back through civilization—we, all, the ancient disciples that ever and always have sprouted from this most early, trilling, holy soil. Amen."
