ST. VITUS DANCE CLUB: Starring MICHELE WYLEN, DOWNCASTE, GEJIUS, and more TBA.
St. Vitus Dance Club is a place for movers, both of the amateur and semi-professional divisions. Cutting-edge club music and atmosphere, intermingled with specially-created performances that blur the line between the dancefloor and the dance stage.
This week sees a run-off for electroclash president between newcomer Michele Wylen, who just played her first-ever live show opening for Ladytron (!); and Downcaste, who sound like a cross between Adult and a couple of crazy kids. And of course, we have the valedictorian, a young genius named Gejius who might be accused of playing IDM by the girl from Minneapolis who came in here the other day hustling for a gig. But he's far too soulful and inspired for any particular genre label, using his laptop like a saxophone satellite dish tuned to the jump jazz of another star. Prance, girls.
Fresh in the Portland music scene, Michele Wylen is a one-person act bringing you a new brand of eclectic electro pop straight from her basement. Born by musical parents, she spent her younger years in LA recording studios playing with instruments and sleeping in keyboard cases. She started producing music in high school and has been evolving her electronic circus-like style ever since. Influenced by everyone from The Faint to Mr. Bungle to Django Reinhardt, her music is ever-changing and difficult to classify, but her vocals are always haunting and her songs are delightfully unpredictable. Her most recent performance as opening for Ladytron at Berbati's Pan on October 12th.
