PORTLAND FREESKOOL BENEFIT: Featuring PONDEROSA, SUITS AND TIES MAKE ME NERVOUS, juggler DAVID CLAY, KAZUM, HERE COMES A BIG BLACK CLOUD, and DJ HERBAL TEA

Founded in 1998 by a group of activist youths working to "change the way that youth are treated and to reclaim kid pride," Portland Freeskool is a grassroots community education project that challenges the entire conceptual underpinning of the school system. Without standardized tests, age segregation, an authoritarian staff, or any form of tuition; knowledge is shared by people who want to share it, with people who want to learn, period. Unsurprisingly, they have their work cut out for them just to stay open.

The acrobalance quartet Kazum, late of Societas Insomnia and Circo Mutante; costumed anarchist shout-along posse Here Comes A Big Black Cloud; and heart-smart party-starter DJ Herbal Tea come bearing their own skills to spread around the class. I'm sure they brought enough for everybody.

STREAMING LIVE DECEMBER 5th!

About the artist

"Portland is full of garage bands, but most of them don't stage laser-gun fights, include a go-go dancer-vocalist section, or use a theremin to lead the nervous, pseudo-surf melody. Actually, none of them does those things except red-caped New Orleans transplants Here Comes a Big Black Cloud. Ideally, Id like to see the balcony-level pinball gallery at Ground Kontrol incorporated into the intergalactic battle scene, and that masterful theremin hum cranked loud enough to drown out the beeps and boops of the games."&8212;Jason Simms, Portland Mercury
