GEKIKAI: post-asiatic salon starring BILL HORIST, VANESSA SKANTZE, DOUGLAS RIDIGNS, SHERI BROWN, NOAH MICKENS, IN THE DEEP MUSEUM, and NEQUAQUAM VACUUM.
"Gekikai" is a Japanese term, meaning both "The World of the Theater" and "The Ways of the Barbarian". Thus Gekikai is the name of our post-asiatic salon: a performative cultural space at the interstices of the radical and traditional arts of Asia and the West. Butoh, odissi, raga, jazz, noise—filtered through a post-modernist and distinctly Western perspective.
This installment of Gekikai revisits a long-form improvisation that happened earlier this year in Seattle. Bill Horist, arguably the world's great virtuoso of the prepared guitar, heads up a cast of post-asiatic musicians who interact both physically and sonically with dancers from the P.A.N., Death Posture, and Societas Insomnia.
Since moving to Seattle in 1995, BILL HORIST has established himself as a noted improviser/performer along the West Coast and beyond. He has performed over 600 concerts in the past 9 years in the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Japan. Bill has performed and/or recorded with Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, KK Null, Matt Chamberlain, Trey Gunn(King Crimson), Chris Cutler, Kawabata Makoto(Acid Mothers Temple), William Hooker, Eugene Chadbourne, Tatsuya Yoshida(Ruins), Shazaad Ismaily, Climax Golden Twins, Haco, Illusion of Safety, Saadet Tuerkoez, Jack Wright, Amy Denio, Uchihashi Kazuhisa, Steve Fisk, Luigi Archetti, Michael White, Christoph Gallio, Eyvind Kang, Lesli Dalaba, Paul Hoskin, Thomas Dimuzio, Wally Shoup, Jessica Lurie, Mason Jones, Jeff Grienke and Tucker Martine among others.
Horist has toured and recorded with a number of bands including Nobodaddy, Phineas Gage, Axolotl, UnFolkUs, Ghidra, Zahir, Tablet and Nervewheel. Additionally, Bill periodically performs as substitute guitarist for Sub Pop band Kinski, among others. In the Summer 2005, Bill will be recording with an offshoot of Trey Spruance's(Faith No More/Mr Bungle) Secret Chiefs 3.
As a solo artist, Bill's improvised, prepared guitar work is informed by Hans Reichel, Fred Frith, and Henry Kaiser, but shows a unique style and personality. He has received critical praise internationally from periodicals including The Wire and Alternative Press. Bill has toured the United States twice in support of his CDs "SOYLENT RADIO" and "SONGS FROM THE NERVE WHEEL" and has appeared at numerous festivals in the US, Mexico and Europe including Taktlos(Zuerich), Spring Reverb(San Diego/Tijuana), Big Sur Experimental Music Fest(Big Sur, CA), Mission Creek Music Fest(San Francisco), Seattle Improvised Music Fest, AntiMatter Fest(Vancouver BC) and Olympia Experimental Music Fest. He was the recipient if the 1997 Jack Straw Artist Assistance Program Grant and has done several presentations for schools from first grade to college-level, including the University of Calgary, Seattle Art Institute and Martin Luther King Elementary (Seattle).
Bill improvises and composes for film, dance and theater as well. In the Fall 2002, he was composer in residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts. There he developed a solo guitar score for University of Calgary choreographer, Davida Monk's "Lyric". He has also recorded pieces for an upcoming Italian theatrical production of Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities". He will be travelling to Calgary again in the Fall 2005 to score a new major work with M-Body Dance Company.
Additionally, Horist works as sideman for recording and performing. He has worked with Jessica Lurie, Two Loons for Tea, Elizabeth Carpenter, Mische Eddins, Paul Rucker, Rollerball, Sulpher, John Schuller, Karl Stevens and Nancy Martin among others.
