About the artist

Alenka Loesch, founder and director of Nexus and Daughters of Ophelia, has been a dance theatre performer/designer for 15 years. She co-founded uRo Teatr Koku Dance with Shinichi Koga which later morphed into inkBoat, based in San Francisco/Berlin. She has participated in many international festivals and been an artist in residence in France, Czech Republic and in Germany.

Loesch became primarily known as a Butoh dancer after 1991 when she began dancing under Hiroko and Koichi Tamano (primary dancers in Tatsumi Hijikata’s company). In 1994, she founded the performance company inkBoat (originally known as Uro Teatr Koku).Loesch’s productions, both solo and ensemble, have been experienced throughout the North American Continent, Europe and Japan. Productions collide between dance and theater to illuminate personal existence. Attuning the primal body to modern life, her way remains marked by the influences of her teachers (Hiroko Tamano, Yumiko Yoshioka, Minako Seki and many others)

Additionally, she has collaborated intensively with Yumiko Yoshioka and TEN PEN CHii (Germany: 1996-2001), Antagon Aktion Theatre (Germany:1998-1999), Do Theatre (Russia: 1997-2000), Minako Seki (Germany: 1998-2000), Shadowlight Theatre (USA: 1993-1997)
