PHASE ONE: WORDS + MUSIC: The Phase One series has had a remarkable first year, hosting eminent figures in both the literary and musical undergrounds and inspiring a loyal scene of followers eager to see what's next in curator Garett Strickland's plan for his chamber of the NW Art Scene. February 15th marks the anniversary of the first-ever Phase One, held at The Towne Lounge in 2006, with another jaw-dropping line-up and big plans for Year Two.
Featuring Bird Costumes, Salina Nuñez, Ora Cogan, Cat Tyc, Alela Diane, Tom Blood, Mattress, Matt Briggs, Tara Jane O'Neil.
"Alela Diane Menig sings stark, ghostly folk. And while her chords and picking may be beginner's stuff, she's already flaunting a large, lived-in growl flavored by antediluvian blues and jazz inflections. Far less girly than kindred spirit Joanna Newsom, and no less commanding, this Portland based siren shares with her pal a primitivism shaped by backward glances and backwoods living. Warning of nightmarish rural invaders in "The Rifle" and vowing to keep her eyes open on the showstopping sea chantey title track, Diane seems destined for grander endeavors." —Barry Walters, SPIN
