THURSDAY, JULY 2
HEXASION, featuring THE OO-RAY —6:30pm, FREE! at the door

Someday's first Thursday Multimedia installation series

OO-Ray Oo-ray, my shoegaze solo project, started about three years ago after I was burned out from playing electronic music as part of my band Ainu. All I really wanted to do was listen to Loveless over and over and over again. It was a while before I realized that I could explore melodies and distortion on my own. I bought a guitar, some pedals, and started recording. After about two years of experimentation, the tracks for Postcards started to emerge. (from oo-ray's bio)

SATURDAY, JULY 4
Free All American Metal Mayhem! with BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH (Featuring grunge legend TAD!), LESBIAN, HC MINDS (ex YOB), & ARANYA —9pm, FREE! at the door

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth TAD was among the first bands to be signed to Sub Pop Records and was possibly the first pioneer of what was to be later called grunge rock. Following TAD's breakup, Tad Doyle formed Hog Molly in 2001, releasing the album Kung-Fu Cocktail Grip late the same year. He later formed the band band Hoof who have yet to release any recordings. Tad's Current (2008) band Brothers of the Sonic Cloth has been playing to rave reviews in Seattle Night clubs

Yep, the band's name is Lesbian. Why? Well, equally cool names like Black Sabbath, Venom and Pentagram were already taken. But also, the name Lesbian evokes pure, sexually charged freedom -- and that's what rock music is all about.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 8
PABST RECESSION PROOF WEDNESDAYS with SALLO, BLACK HEART MOON —9pm, FREE! at the door

SALLO is a combination of dreamy dark and driven instrumentals, dirty funky improv and dramatic somber piano pieces are some of the elements that describe the dynamic musical stylings of Sallo. The unusual combination of drums and keyboards produces a unique sound difficult to categorize, but some influences include Godspeed, Yann Tiersen, Medeski Martin and Wood, Danny Elfman and Radiohead. Sallo has collaborated with a variety of local artists including the Portland Cello Project, Silk & Olive, and the Castiron Carousel marionette troupe.

Black Heart Moon Local boy-girl duo Black Heart Moon includes cellist Catherine Odell (of Horse Feathers, Sea Wolf, and Hide and Go Hustle) and Perry Pfister (of Ponyghost). By association alone, this band is pretty f@#*!ing cool. Odell's heartfelt voice glides over her carefully strummed guitar, with Pfister's bass acting as the bands' sturdy backbone. Bitch Magazine presents LACTACIOUS (Record release), with SAUCY YODA, VERY INTERNATIONAL LOVE, GUMAR BAND, & DJ SOLOMON —9pm, $3.00 at the door

Lactacious All Female Dance/Rap groups are dime a dozen it seems lately. Everywhere I look there's another one. From a gold tooth, to a former dancer for Lil Wayne, thats their "extra something".

SATURDAY, JULY 11

This face-off always promises to be a dance marathon - "I Wanna Be Your Lover" takes a swing at "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)," only to be pounded by "Wanna Be Starting Somethin," which had better watch it's back when "Kiss" comes around. This experience is presented by bombhiphop.com who have successfully produced over 50 of these events in San Francisco as well as Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Bend and Vancouver, BC. "As a concept for a DJ battle, Prince vs. Michael is brilliant," writes SF Weekly's Hiya Swanhuyser. This dance party event features music from Prince, Michael, The Time, The Jackson 5, Sheila E., Janet Jackson, Vanity 6 and many more. Who will win, The Purple One or the King of Pop? Who cares... this is the perfect night out to lounge with your friends, make some new friends, get your drink on, dance your @ss off and celebrate the music of both these pop stars.

SUNDAY, JULY 12
SURREALISTIC VAUDEVILLIAN CARNIVAL MUSIC! What better way to spend a Sunday eve? Gyspy music and booze... with Denver's UKELELE LOKI, and straight from Tim Burton's Ipod into your head comes PROFESSOR GALL, also Portland's newest and cutest muse KARLA MI LUGO Witness the spectacular peculiarity! —9pm, $5.00 at the door

ABOUT PROFESSOR GALL: "This Portland collaborative effort prides itself on being the good kind of weird as they mash up old-timey, sometimes Vaudevillian but mostly joyous swing numbers...sounds like something you'd find on Tim Burton's iPod" The Source Weekly , Bend, OR

ABOUT UKELELE LOKI: "Ukulele Loki and the Gadabout Orchestra have been roving about for half a decade, spreading the bizarre and celebrating the obscene and insane with their unique blend of 1920s-music hall meets 1980s-shoegazer, all with a dash of indie recklessness and a tweak of rustic folk. The new self-titled album has the maniacal craftsmanship of Queen's "Killer Queen"and the off-the-wall lyrical punchiness of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Listening to it is like sneaking into the state fair after hours and taking a free ride on the carousel all by yourself. Fun, exciting, but with a distinct need to connect. The album's highlight is the tune "Prague: 1998," a catchy, yet honest song (in the vain of Bob Dylan's "She Belongs To Me,") about the mystery of attraction. 'She loves with a vengeance like serving a sentence and settling a score...' And there he is, the sad clown, lusting for companionship. The live show is a reflection of this type of gloom-turned-toward-the-sun. Sad and sexy, nostalgic and nouveau. Loki's performance art might be actually more reminiscent of "The Little Tramp" than "The Greatest Show On Earth." --by Christina Eisert, for BUZZ

MONDAY, JULY 13
Come join our shoe gazing friends as they present their new cd and kick off their summer tour! SPACE WAVES CD RELEASE, also HAPPY PRESCRIPTIONS, and SLUTTY HEARTS —9pm, $5.00 at the door

HAPPY PRESCRIPTIONS are soft and spacey yet very reminiscent of The Cramps! Goth-gaze, hell yeah!

SLUTTY HEARTS bring on sexy minimalist down tempo punk rock. Makes you want to drink and get it on. Slutty Hearts are a multi-instrumental indie-pop duo that manage to play drums, guitar, keys, synth effects and harmony vocals all at the same time, in an unusual set-up that features a split drum kit. (No one ever has a hand free in this band.) Their sound runs from Cramps-y skronk to Modern Lovers lo-fi to shoegaze shimmer. They have probably too many songs about the sun.

SPACE WAVES invite you on a blissed-out celestial journey as they perform songs from their debut ep. They will also be debuting songs from their forthcoming full-length album, which they suspect were whispered into their ears by silver-haired beings from an alternate dimension.

MONDAY, JULY 20
DOOMTREE, ANIMAL FARM —9pm, FREE! at the door

DOOMTREE Whether it's been The Replacements or Atmosphere, music from Minneapolis has a history for being vastly-influenced as well as edgy. Longtime allies of the latter group, Doomtree is one of the best things coming out of the Twin Cities these days. The nine-piece group has some familiar faces to the underground Hip Hop community. P.O.S., who released the acclaimed Audition album [click to read] on Rhymesayers in 2006, joins Dessa, an accomplished poet and emcee, along with seven other members. Jokingly, Dessa tells HipHopDX, "Doomtree is not good at counting. We don't know how long we've been doing it and how many people are in the group." Regardless of their counting abilities, this group boldly incorporates a mosaic of love, loss and the struggle for twenty-somethings to survive into genre-defying music.

The Northwest hip-hop community should be proud. Animal Farm's upward trajectory has reached impressive heights, seeing their latest album, The Unknown, secure a #3 spot on the CMJ hip-hop chart. The album, released to great fanfare last summer, features "Peace," a song with legendary rapper, KRS-One. What makes Animal Farm so gratifying to listen to and see live is a never-ending supply of upbeat samples and energetic, smooth delivery from these four Portland/Eugene emcees. Socially conscious lyrics and a reliance on rhymes, not ubiquitous cursing, makes for repeat listenings.

FRIDAY, JULY 24
FLOATING ACTION, GENERATIONALS & guests, WISHYUNU —, $5.00 at the door

After Seth Kauffman's 2006 debut and 2007 follow-up left critics drawing comparisons as diverse as Motown to the Carribean, Kauffman returns as Floating Action. This April, Park The Van Records will release Floating Action's self-titled debut, and Kauffman's most accomplished work to date. Once again Kauffman has performed and recorded virtually every note himself at his home studio, and -- in an age where obsessive computer editing and auto-tuning are taking the humanity out of even most home recordings -- once again his refreshingly organic approach to making music is receiving rave reviews: "He invokes those classic, soul staples of deep and penetrating bass lines, simple but ideal and perfect lyrics about the troubles of love and jingling guitars. He gives you the jitters and the absolute sway is all his

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5
PABST Recession Proof Wednesdays with CLASSICAL REVOLUTION —, FREE! at the door

We love classical music. We love playing classical music. We love listening to classical music. We are tired of the elitist and inaccessible nature of the classical world. We believe that there are many that would enjoy classical music if they could access it in a setting that is comfortable for them. We believe classical musicians should be allowed to perform in a setting that is more casual - where the audience is allowed to have a drink, eat a scone, laugh a little, and clap a lot. We believe everyone can enjoy the music that we love.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 15
APHRODESIA, & JUJUBA —9:30pm, $10.00 at the door

Maybe Aphrodesia is further proof that it's time to update the word 'afrobeat'
with something else. True, the group's horn-laden polyrhythmic funk owes more
than a passing glance to Fela Kuti's revolutionary 1970's blueprint, and
yes, this is the same San Francisco-based crew who braved armed Nigerian border
police during their 2006 pilgrimage to Lagos, Nigeria and the New Afrika Shrine-
Femi Kuti's continuation of his father's legendary nightclub and the birthplace
of afrobeat itself. But Aphrodesia's sound- the rich, dual female lead vocals,
jazz-inflected horn section and powerful rhythm- has always encompassed much more
than just afrobeat.
